Sewing Her Own Path. How Ramatou Transformed Her Future Through Vocational Training
For Ramatou Madmgu, life once felt like a waiting game. As a young girl from the Muslim community, opportunities for education and employment were scarce. With no clear path forward, she spent years at home, idle and uncertain about her future. Everything changed when a friend told her about the Skills Center, an initiative of Youth Outreach Programme (YOP) that provides free vocational training to young people.
“I had been home for so long, doing nothing,” Ramatou recalls. “When my friend mentioned the training, I didn’t hesitate. I applied, was selected, and that decision completely changed my life.”
At the center, Ramatou mastered the art of tailoring, a skill she never imagined would open so many doors. Not only did she receive hands-on training, but YOP also equipped her with a startup kit, ensuring she had the tools to begin her own business immediately after completing her training. Today, Ramatou is no longer waiting for life to happen but she is shaping her own future.
“I work from home, sewing dresses for customers, while saving up to open my own shop. With Ramadan coming up, I have so many orders that I barely have time to rest! This business is helping me earn a living, support my family, and plan for bigger things ahead.”
Ramatou’s journey doesn’t stop at her own success, she is determined to pay it forward.
“I want other young Muslim girls to know that they don’t have to sit at home, waiting for opportunities to come to them. Learn a trade, no matter how small, it will give you independence.”
As a way of giving back, Ramatou now offers free training to others, just as she once received.
“I got this opportunity for free, and I want to pass it on. If any girl out there is willing to learn, I am more than happy to teach them.”
Ramatou’s story is evidence to the power of opportunity. Through YOP’s vocational training, she didn’t just learn a skill, she gained confidence, financial independence, and a vision for the future. As she lifts herself up, she is lifting others with her, one stitch at a time.
