Turning Challenges into Triumph: The Inspiring Story of Timfichih Ronet Ncham

One shining example of resilience and hope is eighteen-year-old Timfichih Ronet Ncham who hails from Njinikejem Kom, in the North West Region of Cameroon. Born differently abled, Ronet faced numerous hardships from a tender age. He grew up without a father and relied for care on his mother, a farmer. Before long, the family’s limited means forced Ronet to drop out of primary school, longing for an opportunity to change his circumstances. However, things took a turn for the worse, following the eruption of the sociopolitical crisis in the North West region, the hardships worsened, becoming unbearable as each year went by.

In 2023, Ronet and his mother were forced to flee their village and seek refuge in Bamenda. Life in the city presented its own challenges, although Ronet remained determined to turn things around. He recalls, “I felt helpless many times, but I never gave up hope that something better was waiting for me.” That hope was rewarded, in May 2024, Ronet’s life took a transformative turn when a neighbour introduced him to YOP. With both apprehension and excitement, Ronet got enrolled in the organization’s Skill Center, even so, unsure of how his disability might be perceived. To his delight, YOP welcomed him warmly and gave him the chance to explore and choose a skill he would feel comfortable to get trained in.

“I was so happy,” Ronet shares. “For the first time, I was not being judged based on my disability. Instead, I was given the opportunity to dream again.” He chose shoemaking, a craft that both fascinated and gave him a sense of purpose. With YOP guiding, Ronet is steadily mastering the art of mending and making shoes. His progress has been remarkable. “The best part of the story is that I am learning for free. I haven’t paid a franc. If I had to learn from other shoe makers, they will ask me to pay huge sums of money, which I don’t have!”

It is Ronet’s verdict that his journey with YOP has reignited his confidence and optimism. “I’ve realized that having a disability does not mean that everything is over,” he says, smiling. “I now see a future with me supporting myself and even inspiring others. I pray God to continue blessing organizations like YOP for them to empower more youths like me.”

Today, Ronet is not just learning a skill; he is building a life of dignity, independence, and hope. His story testifies to the power of resilience, community support, and the belief that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the potential to succeed.
